Experience Realm #3 - The Emotional Realm
The emotional realm can be thought of as that portion of human consciousness that deals with feelings and emotions. It is an internal landscape that every individual possesses and navigates throughout their life. In this realm, joy, sorrow, fear, anger, love, hatred, envy, pride, and a vast array of other emotions exist and interact, shaping our experiences, perceptions, and behaviors.
One of the key features of the emotional realm is its subjectivity. Every individual's emotional makeup is unique, colored by their personal experiences, cultural background, genetic predisposition, and psychological makeup. What might invoke feelings of happiness in one person may evoke sadness or indifference in another. This complex network of emotions often fluctuates and changes in response to external events and internal thought processes.
The emotional realm isn't just about individual emotions. It also includes the connections and relationships between them. For example, joy can be heightened by past sorrow, anger can become guilt, and fear can give rise to courage. Emotions are closely intertwined with our thoughts, beliefs, physical sensations, and actions. Think about how your childhood experiences envoked certain beliefs about your appearance, your athletic abilities, and you communication skills. Now, add to that the experiences you had in school, the playground, the classroom, and the extra curricular functions.
The emotional realm is also where emotional intelligence operates. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability we have to identify, understand, use, and manage emotions in positive ways. It involves skills like emotional awareness, the ability to apply emotions to problem-solving, and the capacity to manage emotional health. This is the measurement tool that some companies use to identify new hires or promotion possibilities. Some even refer to this realm as our EQ "emotional quotient" capacity. We are reminded not to confuse this with IQ or "intelligence quotient".
While we can't directly observe or measure the emotional realm like we can the physical one, it does have a significant impact on human life. Emotions often play a major role in our decision-making processe. This then influences our relationships, affects our physical health, and contributes significantly to our overall quality of life. My point in sharing this type of life experience is to simply to open your mind (no pun intended) to exploring the emotional realm and the role it plays in personal development and well being.
