1. You Must Start By Establishing New Relationships:

   Encourage bonding within the new family by planning activities that help everyone interact and communicate.

   Don't expect miracles. Be realistic. Understand that it takes time to build relationships.

   Parctice some patience - having realistic expectations will help everyong blend harmoniously.

2. Communicating Effectively and Often Will Help:

   Remember that one half of communication and the other half is listening. Only by listening will each family member feel validated and respected.

   Try to maintain open channels of communication at all times. This will give each family member the opportunity to express their feelings and concerns freely.

3. Don't Hesitate To Seek Help - Professional Guidance If Necessary:

   Remember there is another family involved besides the one you are trying to build foundationally. Respect input from them. This doesn't mean you have to agree with them, just respect their input.

   Ask for help when you need it. Hustling kids from one activity to another often becomes a challenge. Don't forget the other parent may be able to help and if you have a good relationship with them, they can work with the blended children also.

   Seek some professional help if necessary.

   Blended families are a blessing. Make sure you understand that making things work will require some give and take. Don't be so quick to give out directives and don't be slow in taking some advice and input from the rest of the family.
